who we are

J Moncton Custom Furniture & Cabinetry was founded in January 2017 by Jonathan Moncton, a craftsman based in Washington, D.C.

After studying Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University, Jonathan completed a Masters in Physical Therapy at the University of Vermont and worked for nearly 10 years at the Medstar National Rehabilitation Hospital as both a Physical Therapist, treating patients with spinal cord injury, and a Rehabilitation Engineer, fabricating and adapting equipment for patients.

Beginning in 2011, Jonathan began building furniture out of his home workshop for his own household and friends and family. As the demand for projects grew, he decided to launch his own business in 2017.

J Moncton CFC furniture is constructed in the tradition of the Arts and Crafts movement.  We use simple designs and sound engineering to create durable and elegant pieces without excessive ornamentation. We employ quality machinery, both old and new, and trusted techniques to craft our furniture and cabinetry, which results in products that reveal the weaknesses of most mass-produced goods. But our furniture is not art to be displayed. Instead, it is intended for daily use and to provide long term value for our customers.

Although each piece of furniture is built entirely out of Jonathan’s one-person workshop, J Moncton CFC is truly a team effort. Family and friends, customers, vendors and suppliers, the woodworking community, and especially our website designer and manager. All contribute to our products in some way.

how we work

We work closely with each of our customers. Once you've reached out to us, together we will determine the best approach for your project. This includes creating precise dimensions with a 3D drawing if necessary and guiding your choice of materials and other design considerations. We view our business as being about handcrafted relationships as much as handcrafted products.

After a design is established, we'll get to work in our custom facility located in Northwest Washington, DC. As needed we'll keep in touch with progress updates; you can also visit the workshop yourself to see your project being created.

When your piece is finished, we'll work with you to schedule a convenient delivery at your home or office. If your project requires home installation, we will work with you to find a reputable licensed and insured contractor to perform this service.

GIVING BACK

At J Moncton CFC we value giving back. Wood is inherently a sustainable resource, but our forests are fragile and must be carefully nurtured. Whenever possible, we use the most sustainable woods available, and our furniture is built to last generations. Further, each year we also give back a portion of our proceeds toward the conservation efforts of the American Forest Foundation headquartered in Washington, DC.
